Google to Release Chrome Operating System in 'Late Fall'

Google plans to release its Chrome operating system in the "late fall", according to Sundar Pichai, Google's head of the Chrome project.

Pichai told reporters at the Computex PC show that "we will be selective on how we come to market because we want to deliver a great user experience. We're thinking on both the hardware and software levels."

When questioned if software developers would have to create different versions of the same application for different brands, Pinchai said the similarity in the base core would mean software companies would not have to develop a new version for Chrome.

"Chrome OS is one of the few future operating systems for which there are already millions of applications that work," Pichai said. "You don't need to redesign Gmail for it to work on Chrome. Facebook does not need to write a new app for Chrome."

New Photos Show White Back Cover of iPhone 4G

New photos depicted a white back cover, glass digitizer, and midboard of the iPhone 4G have surfaced on PowerBookMedic.

The digitizer resembles the 3G and 3Gs with the exception of a camera hole next to the top speaker. The back case doesn’t resemble anything we’ve seen so far. The photos do confirm these will likely be available in white.

One other note is that the model # of the device in these pictures is XXXXX. Usually that indicates a prototype model. Usually you don’t see prototype pictures so close to a model release, which makes us wonder if the iPhone 4G really will be released at WWDC.

Take a look below...

Concept Apple TV Remote with Multi-Touch and Bluetooth

Graham Bower has posted a concept image of a new Apple Remote with Multi-Touch and Bluetooth that would control the next Apple TV.

Here's a fun idea. To coincide with the anticipated launch of Apple TV "Take 3," we can expect the launch of a new Apple Remote. The current model, sports a spiffy new brushed metal enclosure and one additional button (separating "Play" from "Select") but it is otherwise identical to the original Apple Remote, launched way back in 2005. It's based upon infrared, which feels increasingly outdated in a Bluetooth world, and while it sports far fewer buttons than competitor remotes, it still seems to bristle with buttons when compared to an iPhone, iPad, Magic Mouse or iPod shuffle. Its fiddly form factor is also arguably one of the weaker aspects of the Apple TV user experience.

Take a look at his design below..

Apple's iBookstore Agency Model Under Questioning?

Reports are coming in claiming that the Texas Attorney General is investigating Apple’s entrance into the e-books market. US Publishers told the Wall Street Journal that they were being approached by the Attorney General’s office to discuss this matter, but refused to give details.

Under question is the agency model which Apple is pushing because it enforces a standard contract on publishers, a condition of which is that e-books cannot be sold cheaper elsewhere.

US Trade site, Publishers Lunch, reported the following “As best we can determine, the questioning so far has been highly-focused in scope, directed at the largest book publishers and at least some retailers." The questioning was described as a general “fishing expedition” for information, which could go on for months, or end very quickly.

However, these concerns have not prevented most publishers from offering their titles via Apple’s iBookstore, as it has had a successful launch.

Earlier, US trade website Publishers Lunch reported that Apple was the subject of an anti-trust inquiry by the Texas Attorney General's office into the agency model. The publication cited well-placed sources as claiming the queries had started in early to mid-April - within days of the launch of Apple's iPad and iBookstore.

AdMob Announces SDK for iPad

Admob, owned by Google, has announced that its iPad App SDK is available for publisher to download and install.

Our new SDK is unified across all devices running the iPhone OS, which means that developers can download one binary for development across all Apple iPhone OS devices – iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. AdMob’s unified iPhone SDK makes it easier for developers to quickly integrate our code and start monetizing their applications.

The new SDK supports two ad formats in native iPad applications: text & tile ads and image ads. Both of these ad formats are available in the three IAB standard ad sizes: 300×250, 728×90, and 468×60.

iPad Text & Tile Ads
The new text & tile ad formats contain the same 35 characters as our standard CPC text ads and are easy to create directly in the AdMob interface. The 35 characters of text are automatically re-formatted into all three ad sizes depending on which size ads publishers have implemented in their app.

iPad Image Ads
Image ads become broadly available starting next week. We recommend advertisers using image ads provide all three ad sizes to maximize the reach of their campaign.

We’re already working with advertisers to create compelling iPad campaigns. Amazon.com is currently running a campaign promoting their Kindle for iPad app:

Foxconn Workers to Get a 30% Raise

Production line workers at Foxconn's manufacturing hub in southern China will get a 30 percent pay raise, according to Reuters.

A string of suicides caused by difficult conditions and high payouts to family members have garnered international attention.

Hon Hai Precision Industry, the owner of Foxconn, said on Wednesday that the cash component of wages would rise by 30 percent effective immediately, more than the 20 percent rise the company had talked about late last month.

Steve Jobs commented on the situation at the All Things D conference yesterday.

"We are on top of this. We look at everything at these companies. I can tell you a few things that we know. And we are all over this. Foxconn is not a sweatshop."

"It's a factory -- but my gosh, they have restaurants and movie theaters... but it's a factory. But they've had some suicides and attempted suicides -- and they have 400,000 people there. The rate is under what the US rate is, but it's still troubling."

"We had this in my hometown of Palo Alto, copy cat suicides. We're over there trying to understand this. It's a difficult situation. We're trying to understand this. We have people over there."

Hon Hai's shares closed 4 percent lower at a nine-month low in a broader market down 1.3 percent, while Foxconn shares shed 1.4 percent in Hong Kong.

Verizon Wireless Currently Testing Apple iPads?

According to “highly placed” sources at Boygeniusreport, Verizon Wireless is currently testing Apple iPad devices on their network. However, it is vague whether or not the device is an LTE device, or a CDMA device, as different sources have told them different things. Could we see an iPad and iPhone on Verizon soon?

Verizon Wireless is currently testing Apple iPad devices on their network. We have been told that the model they are testing is a CDMA-compatible device, and while our source mentioned LTE in some capacity (possibly another model), we haven’t been able to independently confirm that part of it. It would appear like the gates of heaven have opened, as we’re probably going to see not only an iPhone but also iPad on Verizon very soon, huh?

AT&T Drops Unlimited Plan for iPhone and iPad to 2GB, Adds $20 Tethering Option

AT&T has announced that it will drop the unlimited data plan for iPad and iPhone and is now offering only a measly 2gb plan for iDevices.

The new wireless data plans – including a new tethering option – will be available beginning June 7.

DataPlus
Provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 1,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 150 emails with attachments, plus view 400 Web pages, plus post 50 photos on social media sites, plus watch 20 minutes of streaming video – for just $15 per month. AT&T says that currently 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average.

DataPro
Provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 10,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 1,500 emails with attachments, plus view 4,000 Web pages, plus post 500 photos to social media sites, plus watch 200 minutes of streaming video – for $25 per month. Should a customer exceed 2 GB during a billing cycle, they will receive an additional 1 GB of data for $10 for use in the cycle. AT&T says that currently 98 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.

Tethering
Smartphone customers – including iPhone customers – who choose the DataPro plan have the option to add tethering for an additional $20 per month. Tethering lets customers use their smartphones as a modem to provide a broadband connection for laptop computers, netbooks or other computing devices. Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer.

For New iPad Customers
The $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.

It's unclear why AT&T has made this drastic change especially concerning the iPad. 2GB is no where near enough data on that device. Perhaps something has changed in the Apple/AT&T relationship.

Apple is set to announce a new iPhone in a week's time and AT&T's actions only serve to increase dissatisfaction among their already upset customers. Hopefully this move brings a Verizon iPhone closer if it isn't on the way already.

Steve Jobs On Flash, Gizmodo, Foxconn, AT&T, Digital Media

Some very interesting quotes from Steve Jobs speaking at the All Things D8 conference courtesy of Engadget.

On Flash:
"Apple is a company that doesn't have the resources that everyone else has. We choose what tech horses to ride, we look for tech that has a future and is headed up. Different pieces of tech go in cycles... they have summer and then they go to the grave. If you choose wisely, you save yourself an enormous amount of work. We have a history of doing this. The 3 1/2 floppy. We made that popular. We got ride of the floppy altogether in the first iMac. We got rid of serial and parallel ports. You saw USB first in iMacs. We were one of the first to get rid of optical drives, with the MacBook Air. And when we do this, sometimes people call us crazy. Sometimes you have to pick the right horses. Flash looks like it had its day but it's waning, and HTML5 looks like it's coming up."

"Our goal is really easy -- we just made a tech decision. We aren't going to make an effort to put this on our platform. We told Adobe to show us something better, and they never did. It wasn't until we shipped the iPad that Adobe started to raise a stink about it. We were trying to have a fight, we just decided to not use one of their products. They made a big deal of it -- that's why I wrote that letter. I said enough is enough, we're tired of these guys trashing us."

On Gizmodo:
Walt: ...the police go and don't issue a search warrant, and they grab someone's computer -- there's a lot of stuff, at least with my computer I wouldn't want anyone to have, and they grab this journalists assets...

Steve: "Well a guy... who can say if he's a journalist."

"There's an ongoing investigation. I can tell you what I do know, though. To make a product you need to test it. You have to carry them outside. One of our employees was carrying one. There's a debate about whether he left it in a bar, or it was stolen out of his bag. The person who found it tried to sell it, they called Engadget, they called Gizmodo."

"The person who took the phone plugged it into his roommates computer. And this guy was trying to destroy evidence... and his roommate called the police. So this is a story that's amazing -- it's got theft, it's got buying stolen property, it's got extortion, I'm sure there's some sex in there (huge laughs)... the whole thing is very colorful. The DA is looking into it, and to my knowledge they have someone making sure they only see stuff that relates to this case. I don't know how it will end up."

On Foxconn:
"We are on top of this. We look at everything at these companies. I can tell you a few things that we know. And we are all over this. Foxconn is not a sweatshop."

"It's a factory -- but my gosh, they have restaurants and movie theaters... but it's a factory. But they've had some suicides and attempted suicides -- and they have 400,000 people there. The rate is under what the US rate is, but it's still troubling."

"We had this in my hometown of Palo Alto, copy cat suicides. We're over there trying to understand this. It's a difficult situation. We're trying to understand this. We have people over there."

On Google:
Walt: How's your relationship? Steve: "My sex life is pretty good."

Kara: Are you going to remove them from the iPhone?

"No. We want to make better products then them. What I love about the marketplace is that we do our products, we tell people about them, and if they like them, we get to come to work tomorrow. It's not like that in enterprise... the people who make those decisions are sometimes confused."

"Just because we're competing with someone doesn't mean we have to be rude."

On AT&T:
"I'll tell you what I'm told -- (LONG pause) -- to make things better, people reallocate spectrum, and they do things like increase the backhaul, so they put in gigabit Ethernet instead of T1... things get worse before they get better. If you believe that, things should be getting a lot better soon!"

On Digital Media and Print:
"Well I think the foundation of a free society is a free press. And we've seen what's happening to papers in the US right now. I think they're really important. I don't want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers."

"I can tell you as one of the largest sellers of content on the internet to date -- price it aggressively and go for volume. That has worked for us. I'm trying to get the press to do the same thing. They need to do it differently than they do it for print."

"I think people are willing to pay for content. I believe it for music and video, and I believe it for the media."
