Firefox 4 is Delayed Until 2011

Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's Director of Firefox, has announced that Firefox 4 is being delayed until 2011.

Development on Firefox 4 has not slowed down and strong progress is being made daily. However, based on the delays in completing the "feature complete" Beta 7 milestone against which our Add-on developers and third-party software developers can develop, as well as considering the amount of work remaining to prepare Firefox 4 for final release, we have revised our beta and release candidate schedule: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/4/Beta

The frequent beta releases have been extremely helpful in identifying compatibility issues with existing web content, so we plan on continuing to release beta milestones through the end of December. Our estimate is now that release candidate builds will ship in early 2011, with a final release date close behind. Please note that, as always, this schedule is subject to change based on feedback from users and community members.

You can download the latest Firefox 4 beta here.

Google Improves Gmail WebApp for MobileSafari

Google has updated their Gmail webapp for MobileSafari will better scrolling and fixed toolbars.

Go to gmail.com from your iPhone and you’ll notice two improvements we’ve rolled out over the past few weeks. First, scrolling is snappier: the speed of scrolling reflects the speed of your swipe gesture. This is helpful for long conversations where a few quick flicks will get you to the information you need much faster than before. Second, the toolbars stay on screen while you’re scrolling rather than moving down into view after each scroll. Being able to access your toolbars from any point on the page should make it easier to triage your email and move around the app.

You can view these changes by visiting Gmail on your iPhone.

11-inch MacBook Air Can Stay in Your Bag Through Airport Security

The 11-inch MacBook Air can remain in your bag when going through airport security, a Transportation Security Administration spokesman told CNN.

As gadget-toting flyers know, TSA officials require that laptops and larger electronics, such as Xbox or Wii game systems, be removed from luggage and passed through X-ray machines separately. Security-checkpoint employees are trained to identify what basic electronic gadgets' innards are supposed to look like in an X-ray image. For larger hardware, the TSA requires a clear shot to make inspecting the complex parts inside easier.

This is definitely great news for travelers. If only Apple had included a micro-SIM card slot, everything would have been perfect!

Apple Warns Gross Margins Will Decline in 2011

In a SEC filing, Apple warns that new products like the iPad and MacBook Air will drive down its gross margins for 2011.

Apple "expects its gross margin percentage to decrease in future periods compared to levels achieved during 2010" and has forecast gross margins of 36 percent for fiscal 2011. This is a reduction of 3.4 percent from 2010 and 4.1 percent from 2011.

"This expected decline is largely due to a higher mix of new and innovative products that have higher cost structures and deliver greater value to customers, and expected and potential future component cost and other cost increases," Apple writes.

Apple May Have Canceled the White iPhone 4

Apple may have canceled the white iPhone 4 altogether, according to a new report from BGR.

According to a previous source of ours, we have been told that Apple in fact has no plans to release the white model iPhone 4. Our source hypothesizes another "delay" communicated around March leading us into an iPhone 5 release time-frame in June / July. Something interesting is that manufacturing sources our contact has are keeping quiet on the matter, not confirming that this was in fact a manufacturing issue at this point, but that there might be something else going on behind the scenes.

Apple announced that the device would not be available until spring 2011.

Spotify Has 'Absolutely No Intention of Selling'

Spotify has responded to rumors that they are in very early acquisition talks with Apple by vehemently denying the report.

TechCrunch reported that "Apple and Spotify are in on-again, off-again discussions about an acquisition, but at best it’s very early in the process. No firm price has been offered, no term sheet tabled. Still, it’s interesting that the two are talking."

Spotify's spokesman Jim Butcher told CNET that acquisitions discussions with Apple have never taken place.

"We wouldn't normally comment on this kind of speculation, but we wanted to make it clear that we have absolutely no intention of selling Spotify," he said.

Google to Release the Nexus Two by Christmas?

Google is reportedly preparing to release a Nexus Two smartphone by Christmas in an exclusive deal with Carphone Warehouse in the UK, according to City A.M.

The deal is said to represent a rethink of Google's sales strategy. The Nexus One was released exclusively in the UK through Vodafone.

An industry source told City A.M., "It looks like Google is experimenting with the future of its mobile model in the UK. It tried releasing through a single carrier, now it is trying a single retailer.

It could be a solution to the problems it experienced when it tried to sell the Nexus One exclusively through its website. People like to be able to go to a store – this solves that."

Apple Bought 70-acres Across the Street From Its NC Data Center

Digital Daily has discovered that Apple owns an additional 70 acres across the street from land being used for their new data center.

According to Catawba County Geospatial Information Services, Apple owns a little over 70 acres across the street from the 183 acre parcel on which its 500,000-square-foot data center is being built. That land was purchased in July of last year, but for what purpose?

The scuttlebutt around Maiden is that the company intends to use it for office space. But that seems about as likely as Apple using it to build some Jobsian theme park.

The rumor is that Apple is planning to double the size of its current structure and could even use the space across the street for the same purpose.

256GB SSD Upgrade Kit for the New MacBook Air

PhotoFast Global today revealed a storage upgrade kit for the new MacBook Air which brings 256GB of space using a SandForce controller.

"Apple Fans deserve better things. The new MacBook Air has already been a successful product. It's ultra portable, good performance and gorgeous industrial design. But we have decided to offer even more. An alternative SSD choice from PhotoFast where users would benefit more from its great performance and large capacity. Now the 11.6" MacBook Air with 256GB SSD comes to your option list.

SandForce is well-known for one of the best SSD controller manufacturer who we have solid partnership with. "Creating a whole new form factor SSD in the very limited time was quite a challenge. Thanks to support from SandForce, we finally made it" said chief engineer Eddie Wang.

There's one more thing, the SSD to USB 3.0 adapter. Considering system switch or clone to new drive, we added this handy adapter with a housing which makes upgrade even easier. And making your spare SSD a portable storage device."

No word yet on a release date or price.

The Sony PlayStation Phone is Real [Leaked Photos]

Engadget has posted photos of the rumored Sony PlayStation Phone.

"We assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches."

The site says a 2010 release might be possible; however, 2011 is more realistic.

A Compilation of MacBook Air Reviews

Interested in purchasing the new MacBook Air? Here is compilation of reviews from around the net.

Anandtech
I really like the form factor of the 11-inch MacBook Air. It's great to carry around. It's like an iPad for people who have to get real work done. I just wish it was faster. If Intel made a 32nm Core 2 Duo, clocked high enough the 11 would be perfect. I guess that’s what Atom is eventually supposed to be, but right now the performance is just too low. Intel appears to have been too conservative with Atom. Perhaps Bobcat and ARM’s Cortex A15 will light a fire under Intel's Atom team.

Engadget
Make no mistake about it, the new MacBook Airs are very good laptops. What they lack in speed and power, they make up for in build quality and big time battery life. Add to that gorgeous displays, solid state storage, and the unquestionably stable OS X, and the concoction makes for a nearly irresistible offering... provided you've got the cash.

MacWorld
It feels like, with these new 11- and 13-inch laptops, the MacBook Air product line has finally come of age. The 13-inch model addresses many of the old Air’s weaknesses (graphics performance, battery life) and offers speeds that aren’t far off the standard of the MacBook Pro line. And yet the 13-inch MacBook Air weighs 1.6 pounds less than what the 13-inch MacBook Pro weighs. Yes, the MacBook Air still costs more and does less than other 13-inch Apple laptops; if weight and size are not important considerations for you, you shouldn’t buy a MacBook Air. But if, all other things being (roughly) equal, you’d prefer a lighter laptop, the MacBook Air deserves your serious consideration.

Cult of Mac
Jobs is right. This machine is suitable for a wide swath of Apple’s customers. In 2008, the first MacBook Air was a high-design machine aimed at a narrow slice of the market. It was style over substance — a machine for reception desks at art galleries. But the new Air is a mainstream machine. It’s suitable for students to take to classes all day, or a businessperson attending a week-long conference. For an information worker like me, it could be a main work machine. I can run my business on this.

MacNN
For our money, the 11-inch MacBook Air is just about spot-on. A better processor would be great, as would a backlit keyboard and more battery life, but these aren't deal killers unless the 13-inch Air isn't an option. At this size, weight and level of comfort, the Air can win simply because it's the system you'd most want to carry with you. It's also arguably the true speed leader in the category. Even with a Core 2 Duo, the new MacBook Air can run rings around other CULV models through the faster graphics and the instant responsiveness of the SSD. It's not quite the future of notebooks, but it's definitely headed in the right direction.

PCMag
Rest assured that despite its size, the Apple MacBook Air (11-inch) is not a netbook. It will share the spotlight with the 13-inch MacBook Air as two of the prettiest, and certainly thinnest, laptops ever made. However, the stratospheric standards that Apple places on aesthetics comes at the cost of features, speed, and battery life—all three areas where the 11-inch MacBook Air trailed rather than led.

Apple Delays White iPhone Until Next Spring

Apple has told Reuters that it will delay the release of the white iPhone 4 again, this time until next spring.

"We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again," said Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. She declined to explain the delay.

Apple has never explained what the specific delay with the device has been. They've only said it has been "more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected."

A recent update to the Apple Store app which allowed for reservations of the white iPhone had given hope that the device would be available before Christmas; however, according to Apple this is not the case.
